A LECTURE PRESENTED AT THE HAMBURG SCHOOL 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE, AUGUST 1998 NOTE: At one time, international abbrevations were used in this English text; however feedback from students and other readers indicated that non-English abbreviations made learning overly complicated, and thus, we have reverted to the English abbreviations for use with English text: r = radix (natal); t = transiting; d = directed (by solar arc), SU = Sun. Charts with moveable 90° dial drawn on the 'Special Uranian' program designed by Aureas Software of Paris, in cooperation with Ruth Brummund and Blake Finley. Certain terms and concepts may not at first be clearly understood. An article appearing in the first 1996 issue of the German magazine Synthese concluded the history of the Hamburg School in 1970. However, the actual facts are that since that time, a number of new ideas in the Hamburg School have been originating from me personally. The many former admixtures of non-essential houses and zodiacal signs and so forth were left behind in favor of an improved, streamlined methodology that needed a new name. The lucid methods of Ludwig Rudolph, in the spirit of Alfred Witte, stand for innovation in the Hamburg School, which has become known worldwide as Uranian Astrology, now also known in Germany as Uranische Astrologie. Today we are here to demonstrate some of these prognostic methods.
Our demonstration subject is a 21-year-old man who last year took his secondary school graduating exams, was in the military by the end of April, and then spent time with a friend at his parents' home in Sweden. At the beginning of August, he began a practical trade apprenticeship. He literally started on Saturday the 3rd of August. On that day, he arrived at a renowned corporation where he has the opportunity to advance. He wished to learn a practical trade before proceeding with further studies; and this he did. Let us take a look at his natal chart. Holger was born on 9 May, 1977 at 22:45 in Hamburg. Our first step is always the confirmation or correction of the birth time (the time of delivery) using the mother's Sun position, since for her this is an event involving her body. If we set the pointer of the disc on the mother's Sun, we see that it is closely clustered with his Midheaven. The Midheaven, the Sun, and Kronos are contacted; but not the Ascendant. This indicates that he surpasses (KR) his mother in some ways. He is secure and self-reliant (KR), yet he is not comfortable in his relationship with her (AS not involved). These are things we should pay attention to, since a mother has a strong influence on her child. It is always important to ascertain first who this person actually is. For this reason, we look for clusters, and we find that many planetary energies conjoin with those of Venus.
What does this say to us? The Ascendant is still directly involved in this cluster. If we interpret Venus as love, he will often experience disappointment and worry (HA) through partnership (VE). When we include Mars and Pluto, the picture changes further. Venus also involves the element of self-sacrifice. His activities will be used to serve and be there for others (HA). This rings true for him. He is very helpful if anyone wants something done, and he does it with pleasure, since he is pragmatic. During his school years, when computers first became widespread, he learned computer repair. As the equipment was replaced by new ones, people gave him the old ones. In addition, he worked in connection with the school theater. In association with theater, Hades would indicate darkness, which was affected by lighting. He stayed busy working the lighting equipment for a number of performances. His school class performed "Hair" and "Linie 1" not only at the school, but also in Berlin, and at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, where he continued operating the lights. Now he is 21 years old, and we work with the individual solar arc ("d"), which is important for prognostic work. It can be to our advantage not only to investigate standard or directed solar arc, where one year = circa one degree, but also half solar arc, where one degree = two years of time.¹; backward solar arc ("b"), where the arc value is subtracted from instead of added to the radix position, and double solar arc ("dd"), which can be seen as the sum of reversed or backward arc (bSU) and directed arc (dSU). ¹ [ed: Half solar arc is in reality the midpoint between the natal planet and its solar arc directed position; i.e. Half solar arc = rSU/dSU or (rSU+dSU)÷2, where r = radix and d = directed.]
We can immediately investigate this very day, 29.August.1998, where Holger has the Arc value of 20°27'. Thus we advance the Sun 20½° forward and see that in the coming period a woman is likely to play an important role. Each midpoint here speaks of a different level of his life. At one level, we recognize the importance of a woman to him (SU.MO); at another level his work, which is accompanied by difficulties or challenges (MA.SA). He must exert himself fully in order to concentrate wholeheartedly on technical matters (MA.SA.UR). It should also be pointed out that events may occur anywhere between 3 months before to 3 months after the exact Arc. Therefore it is not advisable to attempt to calculate an exact date. A computer printout that lists current solar arc contacts to distances and half-distances can also be useful, and remember that solar arc directions indicate events anywhere from ¼ year beforehand to ¼ year afterward. To expect more exact results might lead only to disappointment. Exact solar-arc timed events have occurred, but this is likely due to chance. In addition to the visual locating of midpoints which the directed Sun triggers, one should also look at the midpoints triggered via the 22.5° angle. The calculation is easy to do. We simply add the solar arc value to the natal position and then subtract 22.5°: SU 4°08' + SA 20°27' = 24° 35' - 22°30' = 2°05'. With this value we can simply go down a computer-printed list and read the midpoints ranging from 2°05 to 3°05 to determine events occurring during the year ahead, and we can time them within 3 months. For Holger, this yields: dSU = AR/SU = KR/PO = JU/KR = MC/NO = SU/MO = UR/HA = MA/SA = VE/UR = NO/KR = AR/AP This indicates that in his public standing (AR.SU) he procures major good luck from an honorable authority figure (JU.KR.PO). A personal relationship with a woman (SU.MO) is subject to unexpected deficiencies or private issues (UR.HA). Concentration on work (MA.SA) will be accompanied by enjoyment of technology and pleasant surprises (VE.UR). Important contacts (NO.KR) lead to far-ranging success (AR.AP) as he expands contact with authorities (NO.KR).
We see within ½° the MC/NO midpoint ("my personal contacts"), which will intensify within a half a year. He already has a young lady friend who took her university entrance exams a year ago and has a year of practical experience behind her. She is now studying in a field that we call "Sozialpädagogik" in Germany, somewhat like a combination of teaching and social work. For a young woman, social work is quite interesting, although she may encounter many worries and concerns by working in such a field. Will she continue on that track? By this method of directing the Sun, we see that the SU/MO midpoint plays a special role this year... this is often an indicator of a significant partnership between a woman and man. If we adjust the dial pointer to the exact midpoint of SU/MO and look at the distances to AS, NO, and CU, important indicators of partnership issues, and we see that the SU/MO midpoint lies 23° from NO; 31.5° from AS; and 16° from CU.
Therefore, if we advance (direct by solar arc) the Lunar Node by 23°, the SU/MO midpoint is triggered. Thus we can estimate the age at a significant contact. The Ascendant will be triggered by the advanced (directed) dSU/MO at about 31, and Cupido at 16, which was aroung the time he met his girlfriend. They met at a school theater performance when he was about 16½ years old. We see that by this simple method we can recognize opportunities and answer questions where age or timing are important. For those born in May, the age is greater than the number of directed degrees, since the Sun moves a shorter distance in a 12-hour period. Thus it appears that Holger can think about the possibility of marriage at about age 30 to 33. If we now proceed according to the method of Ludwig Rudolph which states that a midpoint triggered by its own directed position is doubly strong, we will again look at the SU/MO midpoint. SU and MO are 3° apart from each other, and thus 1½° distant from their mutual midpoint. If we add 1½ to 22½, we get 24... and if we direct SU/MO by 24°, it reaches the natal SU. Likewise, MO directed by 24 reaches SU/MO.
