Issue I/96 of the German journal Synthese and issue III/98 of the ASHS Forum have already written of the history of the Hamburg School.  In both cases, however, the developments end in 1970.  "What happened after that?", ask many readers, since this does not even account for half of the existence of the association at the time of its 50th anniversary, which occurred in 1998 on August 16.

In 1993 on January 9, we found ourselves at the 100th birthday of Ludwig Rudolph, and the Hamburg School held a ceremony in his honor.  Personally, I have thought of him often, and I owe him much gratitude.  He taught the methods of Alfred Witte in a very clear way that nonetheless only few today understand.

The first lecture was given by the Chair of the Association, Udo Rudolph, the son of the man honored.  He presented an examination of his father's chart.

The second lecture dealt with the first meeting of Ludwig Rudolph and Ruth Brummund. This meeting which took place in 1969, and began at 8 pm on  October 23, came to be of extraordinary importance for Uranian Astrology.  Ludwig Rudolph gave the lecture and worked with the 360° dial, which he had to turn 8 times in order to find all the investigated midpoints.  In addition to the widely-known planets there were symbols familiar only to a few -- these were the Transneptunians of Alfred Witte and Friedrich Sieggrün.

Master Teacher Ludwig Rudolph relaxing after an interesting discussion with his enthusiastic student, Ruth Brummund.

The loose sheets with the Transneptunian data and Ludwig Rudolph's manual Leitfaden served as an introduction to this system.  I set about eagerly to study with the assistance of  the manual and found satisfactory answers to my questions within 2 weeks.  It was fascinating how in response to a question, the dial was turned and pointed toward a planet or at the midpoint between two factors... yielding answers amazingly more concrete than anything I was able to find with prior techniques.  While not elaborating needlessly, Ludwig Rudolph pointed out the most feasible options.  Thus my interest increased.

By Christmastime of that year, Ludwig fell ill, and Udo substituted with lectures and question sessions.  This was the beginning of some intensive cooperative work.

An impressive experience once again occurred nearly a year later, in 1970, from October 2 to 4, during a weekend conference.  Around this time the actress Grete Weiser had an accident, and only her date of birth was known.  Ludwig proceeded to work with the noon positions of the planets alone and demonstrated that indicators of the accident could be found in the chart. The results were so accurate that it left the listeners astonished.

In the Summer, when Ludwig and his wife Emma spent much time alone at home, I visited them frequently, and we played the card-game Skat. During the card games, Ludwig passed on his knowledge and experience.  He was a shining example for me, as he taught me to find optimal information from the chart in a minimal period of time.

The day of the first meeting came to be of special importance not only for me, but for the entire association.  Therefore we will examine the chart of the first meeting with the radix and directed Sun positions of individual people involved.

The Sun positions of the participants are indicated by the first letter of their name, and the Sun of the ASHS, (the Hamburg School Study Group) with the abbreviation ST.

Looking at the table beneath the chart, we can we see that under the 16th harmonic, 22°30' notation column, Ruth's directed Sun and the directed Sun of the ASHS are within a degree of each other -- an indicator of parallel interests.  The radix Sun on October 23 is at 0°12' Scorpio, which shows squared to 7°42' also.  Next we look at the configurations of the transiting Sun at the event with the planets of the persons involved.

It is an enjoyable day (tSU=tVE=dST) for the Study Association and also for Ruth with Ludwig and Udo (=dR=rL/dU).  Ruth triggers developments for Ludwig (dR=rL/PL) in the Study Association which lead to public contact (MO/R).

Open public communications (AR/ME) are put across by a strong woman (MO/VU), and these leave others with thoughts about the future (AS/NE).  For frontier sciences (NE/AP) it is a moment of influence (MC/VU) on public attitudes toward metaphysical issues (MO/HA).  Unexpected and stimulating congeniality (VE/UR) brings about beneficial developments (JU/PL) in the intellectual and spiritual realms (JUPL/PO).  A moment of progress has arrived (MC/UR).  Despite uncertainties (NE/HA), cooperation (NO/ZE) with a dynamic woman (MO/UR) leads to concentrated work efforts (SA/ZE).  However, weaknesses and covert actions in future times (NE/VU) lead to eventual separation (SU/AD).

The transiting Sun has already shown us so many indicators of the foundations of later developments.  For us today, however, the focal point is Ludwig Rudolph, and we adjust his Sun by arc direction to 19CP03.  First we look at how this configures with the Sun positions of the participants and then to the other points and midpoints in the chart.

L = dU = dST/dR = dST/tVE = rU/AR = rU/AP = dR/tSU = rR/tAD

Ludwig himself experiences this day as beneficial development in intellectual and spiritual matters (L=JU=PL=PO).  Trust and clarity (JU=PO) bring about a change (=PL) for Udo in the Study Association (=dU).  The energy in the group coming from Ruth (=dR/tSU) brings Udo success out among the general public (=dU/ARAP).  Ruth demonstrates persistence (rR/tAD).  Long-hindered reforms (UR/AD) as a future goal (NE/ZE) meet with resistance (AS/NOSA).  The problem lies in a lack among some (NOSA/HA) of trust and faith in the future (JU/PO).  Some, secretly, and with negative attitudes (NOSA/HA), reject the positive new ideas (JU/PO); and this leads naturally to a dead end (SA/HA=VE/AD).  Dedication and loyalty (VE/AD) to progress (MCUR/SU) is met with powerful resistance (AD/VU) to the dynamic woman's efforts (MO/ZE).  As long as ideas are shared and put into action (ME/MACU), the group increases in membership (NO/AP). Independent thinking (ME/KR) is a learning process for all who are ready for it.  Instruction and education (SA/AP) lead to success accompanied by more appeal (SU/VE) and significance (ME/KR).

The radix Sun of the Study Association, at 24LE30, is also of importance.

ST = dL/NE = rL/AR = dU/KR = dR/MO = dR/NE = rR/ME

=(Transits:) = MC = MO = AD

For the Study Association (ST) this is the hour (MC) for creating an established position for itself among the public (MO/AD).  Ludwig's future standing among the general public (dL/ARNE) depends on Udo's self-reliance and leadership (dU/KR).  In relation to this, Ruth and her future-oriented ideas (dR/MOMENE) play an essential role.  Success and clarity out among the public (AR/JUPO) take place when ideas are put into action (ME/VU). Disharmony (VE/NE) in the relations between a man (SU/NO) and a woman (MC/MO) could lead to uncertainty (VE/NE).  Discussion of inadequacies and of metaphysical mysteries (ME/HA) leads to an upward trend (PL/KR).  Futuristic techniques (UR/NE) lead to public appeal (MO/VE), and exchange of ideas (AS/ME) combined with implementation of changes within the organization (PL/CU) bring about an increase of communications (ME/AP).  The Association develops (PL/CU) its business matters successfully (ME/AP) if everything proceeds in harmony (MC/VE) and with perseverance and persistence (SU/AD).

The Study Association is a group of astrologers. What significance does this day have for the participants and the Study Association?  We will now investigate the astrology midpoint between Uranus and Apollon.  The position is 4°02.

Ruth applies herself wholeheartely (rR) for the advancement of astrology (UR/AP).  The bond with the elder Mr Rudolph (rL/NO) yields success (dL/AP) due to discussion of Udo's ideas for the future(dU/MENE).  However, productivity is hindered by major disadvantages and handicaps (=ZE=VU=HA) due to uncertainty about the methodological techniques (UR/AP).  A small group (CU/AD) sets about with concentrated effort (MA/AD) to implement the futuristic developments of another [i.e. Alfred Witte] (AS/UR).  Startling rebuffs (ASHA/UR) of their longstanding unique status (KR/AD) among the general public (AR/MC) leads to highs and lows (KR/AD).  Nevertheless, their  astrology (UR/AP) gains ever-widening appeal (VE/AP).  There is devotion (ARAP/VE) to unseen objectives (HA/VU).  General contentment (ARAP/VE) is felt over the ascent (SU/KR) and increasing public contact (MO/PL) resulting from enthusiastic (SU/MA) organizational teamwork (AS/VU), while those averse to it (AS/HA) go their own way (ME/SA).  Hamburg School astrology (UR/AP) ultimately brings outstanding success (JU/AD=AS/VU) through the association (SU/CU) or those seeking to deepen knowledge (AD/PO).

On this day, Mars and Cupido stand together, indicating cooperative work resulting from the association.  Here we see also the Sun postions at 21CP31 and 21LI24.

MA/CU = rL/rU = rL/KR = rU/rR = dU/AP = dR/SA = rST/AD = rST/NE

=(Transits:) = KR

= MA/JU = MA/PO = AR/PL = ME/ZE = NO/UR = JU/KR = KR/PO = MC/AD = SA/UR = SU/NE = MO/AD = PL/AP = NO/VE = VE/SA = CU/KR = AS/PL = MA/KR = NE/AD = PL/HA

A significant working association (MA/CU=KR) is built between Ludwig (=rL/KR), Udo (=rL/rU=dU/rR), and Ruth (=rU/rR).  Ludwig is the leader (=rL/KR).  While Udo experiences success (=dU/AP), Ruth remains somewhat isolated (dR/SA).  For the perpetuation of the high status (KR) of the organization (MA/CU) into the future, there is potential (MA/JUPO) for new situations (AR/PL) that would resolve any indecision (ME/ZE).  Successful work in promoting clarity and understanding (MA/JUPO) effects changes among the general public (AR/PL) through discussion of objectives (ME/ZE), and then putting plans into practice (ME/ZE).  Unexpected contacts (NO/UR) with people of high intellect (KR/PO) brings about success and confidence (JU/KR).  Resistance to and delay (MC/AD) of reforms (SU/UR) by weak and confused people (SU/NE) leads to depressions and blockages (SU/AD).  Increasing changes (PL/AP) among harmonious contacts (NO/VE) can remove the alienating conditions (VE/SA).  Cohesion of leadership (CU/KR) and the development of cooperation (AS/PL) depends upon independent work (MA/KR) for common objectives (MA/CU=CU/KR=AS/PL).  However, other conditions develop (ASHA/PL) when too much negativity develops in secret (PL/HA).  The possibilities for different approaches (AS/PL) are limitless (PL/AP).  It remains for each individual (VE/SA) to reject or accept issues (VE/SA) according to his or her interests.

Ruth Brummund with Ludwig & Emma Rudolph (1978)

Just as this day is analyzed as a foundation for future developments, we can proceed to assess the potential consequences of any given event.  Instructions for doing so are clarified in the Brummund Technique Book.

For this destined moment of meeting with Ludwig Rudolph I am endlessly thankful.  Due to him and his direct manner of pointing out the most efficient methods, I have upgraded my previous conceptions, and this in turn has altered my entire life.  It is with deep gratitude and great admiration for Ludwig Rudolph that I recall the day of meeting with him, my own Master Teacher.
